Windows 7 - Support End Date

19/11/2019

Important information

Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7 as of the 14th of January 2020.

Message from Microsoft:
“After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates and support for PCs with Windows 7. If you continue to use Windows 7 after support has ended, your PC will still work, but it may become more vulnerable to security risks.”

Video explanation: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/windows-7-end-of-life-support-information

Options going forward:
  1. Do nothing and continue using Windows 7. The risk is that programs may start to become incompatible and the security will become more and more vulnerable each day that passes.
  2. Upgrade to Windows 10. You must purchase a Windows 10 License and rebuild your computer back to factory. We will then transfer your old data to the new system.
  3. Purchase a new computer with Windows 10 already installed. This will also have new computer warranty and much better specifications than your old system.

Hi Noel, if you are using Windows 7 and you don't want to change then that is up to you. The risk you will be taking is that no more security updates will be provided to your system after the 14th of January and therefore you could be more vounarable over time. If you would like to call us to disucuss further please call us on 02 4751 7111. Thank you.

Hi Peter,

Is is ultimately up to you if you want to upgrade to 10 or not. Your Windows 7 computer will continue to function as normal. If you do decide to upgrade and if you are lucky it may activate itself should your serial key for Windows 7 be accepted. The reality is you will likely need to purchase a license to activate Windows 10. The other option would be depending on the age of the Windows 7 computer to upgrade to a new computer that already comes with Windows 10 licensing.

We hope this information is helpful.

This information is incomplete. You DO NOT need to wipe your existing hard drive and install Windows 10, setting everything back to factory. A simple upgrade to Windows 10 is all that is needed, leaving all Windows 10 compatible programs installed, along with all your data.

Depending on the age of the PC, an SSD hard drive might be the better way and more affordable option over buying a new PC.

Hi Brett,

Thank you for your reply.

Although the upgrade assistant works we have found that issues arise in Windows 10 environment. I am sure this is not the case in EVERY instance but we believe starting on a new install would be more stable than doing the upgrade. When Microsoft was offering the free upgrades when it was released the issues from upgrading from 7 to 10 were roughly 3 out of 4. Our goal is to get the best result for the end user rather than upgrade and potentially have issues that need to be rectified at further cost.

We also agree if the current system has decent specifications that a SSD upgrade is a great option.
